How to Make a Paper Plate Sunflower

Step 1: Prepare the Paper Plate

Place a clean paper plate on a flat work surface. Make sure the front side of the plate is facing up.

The round shape of the plate will become the main part of your sunflower. If you want to add color to the flower, you can leave the plate white and cover the outer part with yellow paper.

Before you start cutting, decide how large you want the sunflower petals to be. This will help you keep the flower balanced.

Step 2: Create the Sunflower Petals

Take a sheet of yellow construction paper. Draw several simple petal shapes with a pencil.

The petals should be long and slightly rounded at the top. You do not need to make every petal exactly the same. Small differences can make your handmade sunflower look more natural.

Draw enough petals to go around the outside edge of the paper plate. You may need around 12 to 16 petals, depending on their size.

Step 3: Cut Out the Petals

Carefully cut out each yellow petal with scissors.

Try to follow the pencil lines as closely as you can. If the edges are not perfect, that is okay. Handmade crafts do not need to look exactly the same.

Once all the petals are cut, place them around the paper plate. This will help you see if you have enough petals before you start gluing.

Step 4: Arrange the Petals Around the Plate

Turn the paper plate over so you can work around the outer edge.

Arrange the yellow petals around the plate. Place the bottom part of each petal slightly under the edge of the plate.

Make sure the petals are spread evenly around the flower. You can overlap them a little if you want a fuller sunflower.

Take a moment to check the arrangement before using glue. Move any petals that look too close together or too far apart.

Step 5: Glue the Sunflower Petals

Apply a small amount of glue to the bottom of each yellow petal.

Attach the petals one at a time around the edge of the paper plate. Press each petal down for a few seconds so it sticks well.

Continue until the entire outer edge is surrounded by yellow petals.

Do not use too much glue. A small amount is enough to hold each piece in place and keeps the paper from becoming messy.

Step 6: Make the Brown Flower Center

Now it is time to make the center of your sunflower.

Take a piece of brown construction paper and place the paper plate on top of it. Trace a circle that is large enough to cover the middle of the plate.

Cut out the brown circle with scissors.

You can also draw small dots or short lines on the brown circle with a black or brown marker. These details can make the center look more like the seeds found in a real sunflower.

Step 7: Attach the Flower Center

Place the brown circle in the middle of the paper plate.

Check that it covers the inner ends of the yellow petals. When you are happy with the position, apply glue to the back of the brown circle.

Press it firmly onto the center of the plate.

The brown center should hold the petals in place and give your paper plate sunflower its classic look.

Step 8: Make the Green Stem

To make the sunflower stem, use green construction paper.

Draw a long, narrow rectangle or stem shape with a pencil. Cut it out carefully.

Place a small amount of glue on the top part of the stem. Attach it to the back of the paper plate so it extends downward from the flower.

If you want a stronger stem, you can glue the green paper stem to a craft stick before attaching it to the flower.

Step 9: Add Green Leaves

Your sunflower will look even better with a few green leaves.

Draw two or three simple leaf shapes on green construction paper. Make the leaves long and pointed at the ends.

Cut out the leaves and place them along the green stem.

Once you like the arrangement, glue the leaves to the stem. You can place one leaf on each side of the stem for a balanced look.

Step 10: Add the Finishing Touches

Look over your paper plate sunflower and check that all the pieces are firmly attached.

If you want, add more details to the brown center with a marker. You can also gently bend the yellow petals upward to give the flower more shape.

For a colorful display, make several sunflowers using different shades of yellow and brown paper.

Allow the glue to dry completely before moving or displaying your craft.
